lunette

Contents

lunette is a scriptable XR workspace for Linux that can spawn Wayland applications, mirror your monitors, and more. It can run as an overlay or as its own independent application. It has native support for both PCVR and the Steam Frame. Everything user-facing is a Luau plugin. It's your workspace.

The long-term goal is a completely standalone XR working environment that can be reshaped with code on the fly, from inside the headset. Remake your world. Choose your environment. Make it work for you.

I've been dreaming of something like AwesomeWM-for-XR for a long, long time, but could not invest the time or effort required to bring it to fruition. For reasons that are obvious at the time of writing1If you are in the future and this is no longer obvious, congratulations (?) on your successful (?) Butlerian Jihad., this has become much less of a consideration, and I am now free to pursue my vision.

Despite being nearly a decade and a half into the availability of VR hardware, there have only been a few efforts to build real XR workspaces, and they are either proprietary, esoteric, or incomplete. I daily WayVR, and it's fine, but it doesn't work how I would want it to work, and lunette - as well as the ecosystem that I hope eventually grows around it - is my answer to that.

I would also be remiss in not mentioning Stardust XR, which I am a fan of, and have contributed to in the past. I think that, in the long run, it is the better approach: lunette is strictly monolithic-with-plugins, while Stardust lets you supply arbitrary 2D and 3D content. lunette makes different compromises, and I hope that we continue to cross-pollinate ideas!
